How ‘Marsyangde’ is deconstructing design norms

In a world where the fashion industry’s environmental impact raises concerns, Arsya Giri, the visionary founder of Marsyangde, is redefining sustainability in fashion. Launched in January, Marsyangde is a women’s sustainable fashion brand that embraces the art of draping to craft unique garments, minimizing waste during production and post-production.

Draping plays a central role in Marsyangde’s designs, from asymmetrical layered dresses to flowy pieces. Giri starts by draping fabric over a mannequin, experimenting with pinching and pinning to create shapes and structures. This approach has two benefits. Firstly, it reduces waste. Secondly, it allows her to visualize the design in three dimensions. She considers how it conforms to the body and enhances movement.

Marsyangde’s designs focus on exploring various cuts to create versatile and experimental pieces. Many of their garments are reversible and detachable, offering a touch of daring and flexibility to the wearer. Despite variations in overall designs, each collection centers on one or two central design themes, bringing cohesiveness to the lineup.

Giri’s Journey and Creative Process

Giri’s journey in fashion began after completing her first undergraduate degree in mass communication. Captivated by the design department during her time at Symbiosis International University in Pune, India, she pursued a Diploma in Fashion Design at Raffles Design International, Mumbai, and an undergraduate program at the London College of Fashion.

As a relatively new brand, Marsyangde operates with a small team, with Giri overseeing the entire creative process. She works closely with her tailors and sister, Sherya, who assists with branding and marketing. To minimize waste, Marsyangde follows a pay-to-order strategy, cutting fabric only after an order is confirmed, and repurposes any leftover materials into new designs.

Giri’s full creative control ensures the brand’s direction and cohesiveness while promoting sustainability throughout production and beyond. Marsyangde welcomes the idea of transforming old pieces into new designs, supporting a circular approach to fashion.

In summary, Marsyangde stands as a beacon of sustainability in the fashion world. It embodies Giri’s vision of combining artful draping, versatile cuts, and responsible practices. This combination aims to redefine fashion’s impact on our planet.
